SECTION II: OBJECT OF THE CONTRACT

Refurbishment of the Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels under the River Thames. This includes the refurbishment, replacement or repair of tunnels, shafts, footways, stairs, floors and buildings, together with lifts, lighting and all other mechanical and electrical services. Pedestrian tunnel construction work. Tunnel linings construction work. Structural steelworks. Electrical engineering installation works. Mechanical engineering installation works.

II.2) QUANTITY OR SCOPE OF THE CONTRACT
II.2.1) Total quantity or scope:
The Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels were originally constructed on 1902 and 1912 and are 371 and 504 metres long respectively and 3.3 metres in diameter. The tunnels are 15 metres beneath the River Thames. The tunnels were constructed from shafts built in cylindrical steel caissons from where the tunnels were driven under the river in Greathead shields and lined with cast iron rings. The tunnels and shafts are lined with concrete and faced with white ceramic tiles and the inverts are paved. Access to the tunnel is provided down the shafts either by spiral stairs or by lift. Each shaft is capped with a circular top works building constructed of brick, stone and reconstituted stone masonry with a glazed roof and a cupola of either cast iron or timber, which houses the lift motor room. The tunnels are Grade II listed buildings. These refurbishments are to include works as follows:
1. Refurbishment of the structure and fabric of the tunnels including the top works buildings.
2. Total replacement of the lifts.
3. Total Mechanical and Electrical replacement and security improvements.
4. Complete the refurbishment in time for 2012 Olympic rehearsal, i.e. 31.3.2011.
Estimated value excluding VAT:
Range: between 9 500 000 and 10 500 000 GBP.
