Patient safety and quality of care are important aspects of an eHealth Action Plan (COM (2004) 356 final) that deals with best practices and experiences from across the European Union. Part of a public consultation on radio frequency identification (RFID) in 2006 (COM(2007) 96 final) concludes that in hospitals and healthcare the use of RFID technology to enhance patient safety should be explored. The main objective of this study is to provide expert input necessary to assess prospective aspects of the applications of RFID in the healthcare market focusing on visions and scenarios with identification of associated obstacles and needs for specific policy actions or research activities.
