Section II: Object

II.1)Scope of the procurement

Quadrupole Corrector (QUACO) Pre-Commercial Procurement.

Reference number: 689359
II.1.2)Main CPV code
73000000 - KA03
II.1.3)Type of contract
II.1.4)Short description:

This PCP will develop 3,8 m quadrupole magnets with 2 90-mm aperture, an integrated gradient of 440 T/m with 120 T/m in the transverse plane with operational temperature of 1,9 K for the R&D of a large international community towards the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (Hi-Lumi LHC). Its objective is to increase the luminosity by a factor of at least 5 above the nominal LHC design and address the needs of the European Research Area as a focal point of global research cooperation and a leader in frontier knowledge and technologies. The magnets to be developed shall consist of NbTi coils supported by a mechanical structure with an iron yoke and will be integrated in the 2 high-luminosity interaction regions of the LHC. The technical challenges range from materials (e.g. NbTi superconductor cables with very high current carrying density), processes (e.g. 3D printing to precise manufacturing) and design techniques for industry to develop products for a wider range of users.

II.1.5)Estimated total value
Value excluding VAT: 6 647 895.00 EUR
II.1.6)Information about lots
This contract is divided into lots: no
II.2.2)Additional CPV code(s)
II.2.3)Place of performance
NUTS code: CH013
Main site or place of performance:

The R&D services will be performed at the premises of the companies which will be selected by the buyers group within the scope of this PCP. The management of the PCP will be performed at CERN.

II.2.4)Description of the procurement:

This procurement will take the form of a pre-commercial procurement (PCP) that is expected to start on 1.3.2016 and end in February 2020. The PCP will award R&D services contracts to a number of R&D providers in parallel to compare competing alternative solution approaches. This will be done in a phased approach with a framework agreement that covers 3 R&D phases (solution design, prototyping, pilot deployments made available to end users from the research communities supported by the buyers group) with intermediate evaluations after each phase that will progressively select the best competing solutions that will be offered a specific contract for the next phase. Testing of the prototypes is expected to take place at 1 of the buyer's premises by experts and end-users and in this way the PCP will provide a 1st customer test reference to participating R&D providers.

II.2.14)Additional information

The final result of the PCP will be 2 pilot magnets necessary for Hi-Lumi LHC consisting of 2 assemblies of ‘2-in-1’ quadrupoles. Apart from the benefits for the LHC, the results of this PCP will also benefit other R&D programmes related to superconducting magnet technologies.

II.3)Estimated date of publication of contract notice:
