Freedom of movement of workers is a fundamental right granted to the citizens of the Union by Article 45 of the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union (TFEU). Also, in the interest of free movement of workers, national social security systems, pursuant to Article 48 TFEU, are coordinated by EU legal instruments. The objective of EU social security coordination is to ensure that persons moving within the European Union do not suffer any loss of social security rights. This objective can only be achieved if the EU coordination provisions are appropriate to and in line with the economic and social developments in the national social security legislations they coordinate.
