Strategic procurement
Aim of strategic procurement: Fulfilment of social objectives
Description: Enhanced Town Centre - Create an enhanced environment for people living, working, and visiting the town through housing and public realm enhancements with an overall aim to encourage and stimulate economic growth. This will be achieved by providing a robust town centre strategy which will seek to consolidate and strengthen the core area. As more residents live distant from the core, private vehicles are used as a primary means of transport. The increase in vehicles and associated car parking has dominated the public realm and contributed to increased dereliction and a utilitarian appearance when compared to its historical impact. Improved Pedestrian facilities - Create multi-functional streets that balance movement and place and provide safety for all within a traffic calmed environment. Connected Amenity Destinations -Maximise connectivity to existing amenities and assets with a particular focus on pedestrian linkages to the River Walk. Integrate main street, lanes, heritage sites and attractions into an orientation plan to encourage visitors to explore the town centre. Wayfinding needs to be erected in the existing public car parks, to entice exploration of the town’s amenities. Promote the heritage and tourism assets of the town particularly through an interactive and animated Public Realm which would aim to establish/enhance an image and identity for Mountrath that is distinctive and authentic. Town greening opportunities – enhance landscape quality and positive ‘sense of place’ which improves the presentation of the town. Dereliction – Seek and encourage redevelopment of vacant and derelict sites which could be repurposed for commercial, social, tourism or residential use.
