The group of atmospheric science (the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology) at the University of Gothenburg works on a research project to quantify the climatic influence of black carbon (BC) particles. Both the mass and light absorption coefficient of BC particles need to be measured simultaneously to calculate the mass absorption cross-section (MAC). Particle mass is the key parameter to study the influence of atmospheric aerosol particles on the climate. The generation of truly monodisperse particles is very important for the University’s research of light absorption of particles, since large particles can absorb and scatter much more light than small particles and introduce systematic errors to the measurement. The research described requires an instrument with very special characteristics, an instrument which can accurately measure the mass of monodisperse aerosol population is necessary. The research group has performed a market analysis, and the result shows that there are no other particlemass analyzers on the market which correspond to the mandatory requirements. Cambustion Ltd is the only company which can provide this unique instrument (AAC) for generating a truly monodisperse aerosol from a polydisperse source and measuring the particle mass. With reference to the above described technical reasons, the University intends to award Cambustion Ltd the contract for the purchase of an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) according to chapter 6, Section 14, paragraph 2 in the Swedish public procurement act (2016:1145). Estimated value is 600 000 SEK.
