A key point for the success of the present project is certainly the wind tunnel choice that is strictly linked to the model engine power units. Only few wind tunnels are available to host such large wind tunnel model (ONERA S1, RUAG-LWTE, DNW-LLF). The WTM-RECYCLE project proposes to perform WT test activity in the same wind tunnel for which the existing model has been designed, the RUAG-LWTE. Preliminary contacts with the selected wind tunnel allowed clarifying opened points concerning the engine propulsions systems and defining costs for wind tunnel testing. This choice was driven by several relevant considerations: The existing A/C model is equipped by 2 wing-mounted high pressure oil engine simulators (property of RUAG) specifically designed for the LOSITA model. Model propulsion units are powered by a huge hydraulic power supply infrastructure available in the LWTE facility (RUAG property) able to satisfy thrust requirements and to overcome life duration and heat problems. In order to guarantee the necessary oil pressure and flow mass rate at the inlet and outlet of the engine simulators, special and complex technical solutions have been realized consisting in drilling special holes in the core model structure as well as at the connection between wings and core structure. A special model sting (property of RUAG) has been used integrating 6 components balance and including special solution (holes and internal piping) to flow high pressure oil from engine units to the oil power supply system located outside the test section. Finally, existing engine propellers unit integrate complex Rotating Balance Shaft devices (property of RUAG) to measure thrust force components during testing. A different wind tunnel doesn't allow using neither the above described power units nor the model sting or other structural model components. ONERA S1 and DNW-LLF uses air power supply systems, while electrical engines were considered (within LOSITA) not suitable for the present application. As consequence, completely new engine sub-systems should be designed and calibrated having a strong impact in terms of budget, costs technical issues, time planning and risk management. According to these reasons, only RUAG-LWTE fulfils these requirements.
