Based on the observation of a massive die-off of salamanders in the Netherlands, a new infectious fungus killing salamanders was described in 2013. If no actions are taken now to mitigate the negative impacts of this disease, Europe might soon witness a mass extinction of salamander species. The work to be undertaken through this contract shall identify the current extent and spread of the disease in Europe, establish an early warning system, develop emergency action plans for the short term and provide proof of concepts for sustainable long-term mitigation measures. Objectives, measures and results of the contract shall be presented on a dedicated website.
