With this procurement call, EFSA wants to obtain a comprehensive literature overview on several of the risk assessment-related issues identified during the EFSA's workshop. Detailed specifications for each of these issues can be found in Section 1.4 (below) for the 3 main GMO risk assessment areas: molecular characterisation, food and feed safety and environmental safety. The outcome of this systematic literature search/literature overview will support the risk assessment considerations for RNAi-based GM plants.

Molecular characterisation considers all relevant scientific data on the molecular characterisation of the GM plant, such as the source and function of the donor DNA, the transformation method, the organisation of the inserted DNA at the insertion site(s), and the expression and stability of the insert.

Environmental risk assessment considers elements such as changes in the persistence (weediness) and invasiveness ability of the GM plant; the potential for gene transfer and its environmental consequences; interactions between the GM plant and target and non-target organisms; effects on biogeochemical processes and the abiotic environment; and the impacts of specific cultivation, management and harvesting techniques associated with the cultivation of the GM plant.
