National Monitoring of River Mussels 2018 — 2023
The assignment consists of monitoring river mussels (Margaritifora) in Norway. The species is listed under the vulnerable category in the Norwegian Red list for species (2015) and it, thus, to be seen as threatened. On the international red list (IUCN), the species is listed as very threatened and many stocks in Europe are rapidly declining. Norway has 1/3 of the known populations in Europe and >50 % of the number of mussels in Europe live in Norwegian river systems. Norway is thus responsible for the species.
The Norwegian Environment Agency would like to continue and expand the existing monitoring of river mussels in the period 2018 — 2023. A total of 20 locations are to be monitored with a view to spreading, density, length distribution and growth. Occurrences of recruitment must be central. The 16 locations that were previously covered by the national monitoring programme shall be included, in addition to 4 new locations. The previous station networks and methodology for monitoring the mussels is to be continued. Water chemistry and fish shall, however, not be continued in the programme, with the exception of the 4 new locations. Measurements of the redox potential is to be included in all locations. In addition monitoring of a further 20 new locations shall be established and implemented. These shall be monitored with a more simple monitoring methodology at 3-5 stations per location. Time-based free counts shall be carried out in order to follow the development of relative density over time. In addition, 2-3 excavation stations shall be established in expected optimum growth areas for small mussels. Length measurements shall be carried out, in addition to redox potential measurements. If there is a lack of data, water chemistry data and data on fish shall also be included in the surveys the first time that a location is surveyed. The monitoring shall be reported once a year (by 01.06), with a final report after the monitoring period has concluded (by 31.1.2024).
