The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a non-departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy. One such fusion experiment is the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) which has recently undergone an extensive upgrade programme referred to as MAST Upgrade (MAST-U).
The MAST Upgrade Enhancements (MAST-U ENH) project will deliver additional enhancements that will further develop the capability of MAST-U. One of the new components central to achieving these enhancements is the Double Beam Box (DBB), a double neutral beam injection system that will deliver 5MW of neutral power from two beams.
UKAEA require supply of the following items:
(a) residual ion dump (RID);
(b) calorimeter;
(c) hypervapotrons (HV) – components within the RID and calorimeter;
(d) beam line module frame (BLMF).
A summary of each item is provided on the eu-supply portal by following the link at I.3. Please note to access and download the document you must have Registered and Logged in (Registration is free).
Suppliers may choose to supply one or more of these items, stating their preferences clearly.
Analysis has been performed to define the overall design. However, refinement may be required to optimise the design to facilitate manufacturing processes. The final detailed design may be influenced by the response to this PIN. UKAEA requires assistance by provision of the following work scope:
• provide manufacturing drawings;
• definition of manufacturing processes and procedures;
• manufacture of the RID, calorimeter, hypervapotrons, and BLMF assemblies (including integration of hypervapotrons into the RID and calorimeter);
• testing and qualification of the RID, calorimeter, Hypervapotrons, and BLMF;
• inspection and cleaning to UHV standards.
The purpose of this notice is to identify the capability of industry and to assist with development of our technical specification and procurement strategy.
