In the context of the ever increasing digitisation of society and economy, the energy consumption and related environmental consequences of cloud computing are among the most demanding challenges of information processing technologies. The Paris Agreement signed in December 2015 sets challenging sustainable development goals for 2020 to 2050. Green-house gas emissions should drastically decrease, renewable energy increase up to 75% and energy efficiency improve substantially, by approximately a factor of 2.
