The objectives of this study are:
— to provide the most recent statistical and scientific data on the Utilised Agricultural Area in the EU at present,
— to provide the most recent statistical data and scientific evidence on agricultural land abandonment in the EU,
— to identify the reasons why agricultural land is abandoned,
— to support the Commission in proposing policies that can reverse this trend, and,
— to support the Commission in proposing policies aim at reclaiming abandoned agricultural land and putting it under active production for energy crops.

Land availability and use is an essential element in several EU policies. However, abandoned land is left unutilized while in several cases it could be taken back into useful production for energy crops. In order to develop and implement the right policies a detailed understanding of the actual available agricultural land in the EU is necessary. Furthermore it is important to understand why land is abandoned.
