The objective of this contract is to provide detailed information and data regarding the use of energy in the EU energy-intensive industries and their potential to improve energy efficiency, to substitute mainstream processes with new processes with a leaner carbon footprint, and to abate CO2 emissions. The following sectors are covered:
— iron and steel,
— non-ferrous metals,
— chemical industry,
— non-metallic mineral products,
— pulp and paper,
— food, drink and milk.
For each of these sectors, representative products or product groups will be identified in order to characterise the main production pathways, the associated energy requirements, the involved energy-using processes and equipment.
Energy use and CO2 emission reduction potentials will then be established, covering:
— equipment efficiency improvements,
— rationalisation of equipment use,
— waste energy recovery opportunities,
— input, process and product substitution,
— carbon capture.
