NHS England is leading the way in cancer care by recognising that quality of life (QoL) is as important to patients as survival. The NHS Long Term Plan for Cancer includes a commitment to ’introduce an innovative quality of life metric to track and respond to the long-term impact of cancer’. Monitoring QoL outcomes will help us to understand the impact of cancer and its treatment — and design services that support people to live well with and beyond cancer.
A pilot project is underway testing the collection of QoL data. As of August 2019, over 3 000 patients have been invited to complete a survey. Patients’ responses (both digital and on paper) have been linked with data held by the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS).
The purpose of the procurement is to select the best value, appropriately skilled and experienced supplier to collect survey data from cancer patients using both digital and paper modes of administration.
Data collected will be used to produce a national quality of life metric for cancer, in line with the commitment in the NHS Long Term Plan. This is a joint project between NHS England and the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) based at Public Health England.
