Map Based Solution for Strategic Public Transit Planning
Skyss/Kringom needs to speed up the pace of the planning process in order to meet the expectations from our stakeholders, both internally and externally. We are looking to shorten the gap between the strategic planning process and the detailed planning process (scheduling). It should be a lot easier for a larger part of the planning team to find information on current routes, stops and timetables as well as modifying, tranforming and creating new routes, timetables and stops. It should be easy to gain access to statistics and KPI’s related to the current og future production. Important data sources such as socioeconomic variables, travel demands (movement data) and passenger counts should be an integrated part of the working process. It makes sense to work more visually within a map based setting.
The challenge: The strategic planning process explained.
Planning and improving the current public transit network is one of the most important tasks conducted by the PTA. General changes to the network is done every year but some changes need to be prepared several years ahead as part of a bigger redesign of the network within a geographical area. The whole process of strategic planning is time consuming involving a market analysis covering knowledge on the current production, demographics, customer data, passenger counts, travel demands etc. This data is analysed separately by different sofwares. There is no easy way to integrate the different sources making it harder to maintain a shared context. The next step usually involves feedback from municipalities and different stakeholders through workshops or dialogue conferences. The planning team then starts a phase of suggesting possible solutions of how the network should be redesigned. For complete information see enclosed document.
