The new digital tachograph (DT) system is made of a vehicle unit, installed in the vehicle cabin, connected to a motion sensor, installed in proximity of the vehicle gear box. This equipment allows to record driving activities. An infrastructure based on both symmetric key and public key cryptography has been designed to secure the operations and interactions of the components (i.e., vehicle unit-card communication, vehicle unit-motion sensor communication, vehicle unit-external GNSS facility communication, card and vehicle unit data download, card data processing).

To facilitate the development of the new DT components sample keys and certificates will have to be distributed to the DT components' manufacturers before the setting up of the ERCA systems.

To support the operation of the new DT the systems providing the ERCA services, namely the root certification authority and the symmetric key distribution operations, will have to be designed, implemented and maintained.
