Title: 81300477.1-Design, Construction and Commissioning of Sludge Management Facility in Za'atari Refugee Camp
Description: Sludge management in Za'atari and Azraq Refugee Camp project (SMZA) is part of the program "Waste to Positive Energy, which aims at developing environmentally and more financially sustainable systems for integrated solid waste management and wastewater treatment at Za'atari Refugee Camp and neighboring communities. This project is jointly funded by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis (EUTF) and is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in close coordination with the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ). The Za'atari Refugee Camp is the largest refugee camp in the country, with more than 82,000 refugees, Za'atari refugee camp is located approximately 15km from Mafraq town and 60km from the city of Amman. The town of Mafraq is approximately 60 km from the Syrian border, while Za'atari Refugee Camp is within the confines of Za'atari village. The Camp is bound by the coordinates of 190750, 188000, and 273500,276750 Northing and Easting respectively in the Cassini projection on the Palestine_1923_Palestine_Grid datum. The topography of the project area is generally gently sloping from the east towards the west with altitudes that range from 667.6 masl to 646.2 masl within the camp. The camp has a sewage network, and the wastewater is transferred to the Za'atari refugee camp wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The treated effluent of the WWTP is used for agriculture, while the sludge is transferred to Al Akaider wastewater treatment plant, to ensure a more economic, sustainable, and environmentally friendly sludge management at the Zaatari refugee camp, it is important to equip the camp with sludge management infrastructure. The sludge treatment facility (STF) are planned to be located approx. 250 m south-west from the Camp district D12 in the available area between the airstrip and the camp"s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The STF should be capable of processing approximately 81,763 m3 sludge per annum at the design horizon of 10 years, at a camp natural population growth rate of 1.5%, resulting in about 105,000 design population for the STF including 10,000 PE for host community septic sludge deliveries, the STF should handle sludge comprising of: - Sludge generated by the WWTP comprising primary sludge and waste-activated sludge (174 m3/d average, ca. 1.5% DS) - Sludge collected by tanker from the PRC tanks (49 m3/d average, max. instantaneous 259 m3/d, ca. 3.8% DS) - Sludge collected by tanker from wastewater pump station #1 (200 m3/y) and pump station# 2 (75 m3/y) The STF is designed considering the WWTP sludge will be pumped 24/7 to the STF and the PRC tank sludge will be delivered infrequently to the STF based on the PRC cleaning schedule. The STF is designed to produce sludge that meets the requirements of the Jordanian sludge standard JS 1145/2016 for Class 2 type sludge as the sludge will be disposed of to landfill, and any wastewater produced within the facility (supernatant, domestic wastewater from Operation building, etc.) will be treated to meet requirements of JS893/2021 Class B effluent requirement and will be discharged in the existing treated effluent pond so that it can be used for irrigation.
