Flexible Energy Services Soft Market Test
The purpose of the soft market testing is in 2 parts. First part, is to understand commercially available products and services within the flexible energy services market. The second objective is to share, with the supplier market the strategy for a flexible energy services solution tender. In this respect, STW and HD are seeking feedback and are looking to understand on how receptive the market is to our approach. Example tender documents will be shared as part of this briefing pack.
We request that participants consider the following:
1) Solutions should be deliverable now with no further development required;
2) We want to look at solutions for the full suite of our asset base from large urban sites to small rural applications.
Please refer to VI.3) Additional Information section for the full description.

Severn Trent is inviting companies to come forward with new ideas that will help to reduce its energy costs in the future. After people, the waste and water company’s biggest expense is energy, which is why it is seeking innovative solutions from other companies, which can make a real difference.
Severn Trent, which serves eight million people across the Midlands and mid-Wales, currently uses around 900 GWh (gigawatt hours) of electricity every year which equates to a bill of around 100 000 000 GBP. Despite being on-track to be 50 % self-sufficient from its own renewable energy sources by 2020, including anaerobic digestion, solar, crop digestion, hydro, wind and food waste, the company feels more can be done. It is hoped that harnessing new flexible energy solutions will help Severn Trent to become more efficient with its energy, which will ultimately drive down bills for customers in the process.
As part of this process, Severn Trent is also aiming to get feedback on its procurement strategy, so that it can ensure it remains relevant and appropriate for the energy market.
Companies coming forward with new ways to help Severn Trent be more innovative with its energy usage are asked to focus on the following areas;
— opportunities to use hydrogen and biomethane, including vehicles and power generation,
— alternatives to traditional diesel standby power resilience,
— energy flexibility and control solutions,
— innovative use of waste heat,
— low-head in-pipe hydro generation,
— solutions for storage and balancing of surplus on-site generation.
